Incumbent Nick Hartin has been filling the role of commissioner since 2003.

Tell us about your background and experience

My roots are firmly planted here in Marshall County, where I have lived here my entire life. As a devoted Christian, family time and ranch work are my passions. With a degree in Occupational Safety and Environmental Science, my journey began as a leader in the oilfield. There, Imanagedequipmentandresolved issues while staying in touch with various suppliers. With 15 years of professional experience, I moved on to District 1, where I focused on road improvements and heavy equipment operation. In 2022, I shifted to District 2, where I later took on the role of Commissioner in 2023

Why do you think you are the most qualified for the position of County Commissioner for District #2?

The role of the Commissioner extends far beyond road construction. It requires a combination of leadership, financial skills, technical abilities, decision-making, and effective communication skills. Maintaining composure and exercising sound judgment in daily operations is crucial. With my background in the oilfield industry and my current position as Commissioner, I'm confident I have acquired the experience needed to excel in this role.

What experience do you have in writing grants and preparing budgets?

Over the past two years, I've worked closely with Marshall County's elected officials to develop the fiscal year budget. Ensuring District 2's financial health, I manage and adhere to state statutes diligently. Beyond managing the county's finances, I've dedicated several years to assisting and preparing budgets for Little City Baptist Church. I have successfully secured multiple grants for road materials and equipment over the last two years.

If new resources were available what is one area of district #2 do you think would most benefit from additional resources?

If additional funding were available, there are several high-traffic areas I would prioritize addressing. It's often overlooked how the total cost of materials and labor can add up when upgrading a road.

Do you think it is better to have more county employees at a modest wage or few employees at a wage high enough to attract quality applicants?

I prefer having fewer employees at higher wages to attract quality applicants. This approach reduces training costs, increases productivity, and lowers turnover rates.

What do you think about the proposed sand mine off of highway 70 at Simpson Road? Is this a concern or something beneficial?

As a commissioner, my primaryconcernwouldbethe potential increase in traffic and its impact on both residents and road conditions.
