Anticipationloomsaround the opening of deer season. By now, hunters have been gathering supplies for camp and gear for the hunt weeks ahead of time. For some, deer camp is the focal point and holds traditions dating back decades and new traditions that are created in the spontaneity of joy. Memories that last lifetimes are made there among friends and family in the great outdoors.

Without a doubt, the food is always a comfort after a long day of hunting to warm up. There is plenty to go around with oversized pots of stew and chili hot for the taking. Skinning a deer can take a while but feeding the crew does not have to. Kabobs, breakfast burritos and steak fajitas foil packets are easy to prepare and an even easier clean up. Nothing a warm cup of coffee can’t fix in the woods. Family and friends of all ages are there to enjoy the festivities. They will be playing those silly old games played as a kid that only takes place at deer camp. Don’t forget the deck of cards and favorite board game. Of course, cleaning duty is always given to the one with the most missed shots and taking a gamble on the weight of the biggest buck always brings out a smile, no matter what.

When the fire crackles in the moon lit sky it summons the old timers to circle around as they have wise wisdom to pass down. Retelling camp stories and tall tales about camp legends always have a way of captivating listeners.

Deer camp is not just for the hunter, even though it may sound like it does. It is a traditional pastime with friends and family to enjoy the closeness that company brings. The older one gets the shorter the season may seem. Enjoy deer camp wherever that may be.
