The Madill wildcat football team scrimmaged the Davis Wolves on Friday, August 21, at Blake Smiley Stadium. The freshman played at 6:00 p.m. with the high school following.
Broken Bow chose not to make the trip as originally planned. Coach Speer said he was pleased with the growth from last weeks inner squad scrimmage to this weeks scrimmage.
“I was pleased with our sideline transitions on and off the field, substitutions, etc. I thought we threw the ball fairly well and handled the option well for the amount of time we spent on it,” Speer said.
Coach Speer is hopeful to see the players improve from week to week. Senior Griffon Williams said he hopes all the players succeed not just on the field, but also in life.
“Everyone comes into a season hoping for a state championship, but we want more than that,” Williams said. “I want everyone to be successful on and off the field. I work hard to be the best version of myself and to push our team to be the absolute best version that we can be. We have improved dramatically from the last 2 seasons. Our coaching staff this year is all in....110%. Our team is more unified this year than it has been in the past 2 years combined.”
This week kicks off the season opener and the players will start their game plan on both sides of the ball. Hard workouts will be Tuesday and Wednesday. Thursday will be light with last minute preparations.
Speer said things are up in the air with injuries.
“We have a few guys hurt and hope to get one, maybe two back before Friday’s game,” Speers said.
Junior Kendall Robertson said even though there isn’t as much time to practice as he hoped, he is staying positive.
“I try to stay positive all the time, it’s easier to be positive when you have a positive influence on the team,” Robertson said. “Our team just needs to keep on practicing our plays and formations more and more. It’s hard having such little time to learn a whole new offense. But I’m confident in our ability and the guys I have playing by my side.”
Coach Speer said the laundry detergent response was awesome, and he thanked everyone for donating. Coach Speer said he encourages everyone to come watch the Wildcats play the Tishomingo Indians on Friday, August 28, at 7:30 p.m. at Blake Smiley stadium. “Tishomingo will be big and physical on both sides of the ball. It should be a good challenge for us to start the season.”
