The second round of the New Years Classic was not good to Coach Taylor Weibner and his team. On January 8, 2021, the Redskins ran on to a seven win and two loss record. This made Kingston the fourteenth ranked, class 4A, team that had its eye on a spot in the finals. Broken Bow punched their ticket by sending the Redskins to the consolation bracket. This was not a close game. Redskins fell 53 to 38.

Weibner said he is still working on finding the identity of this group of players.

“We have moved guys up when they have practiced well,” Weibner said. “And then that might not carry over to the next game.” This might have an impact on how he experiments in the future to find the starting five.

In the first quarter, Brady Brister came out determined and responded with two threepointers and a field goal. Braden Matchen added two free throws and the Redskins lead ten to eight at the buzzer.

Second quarter, the Savages came alive to the tune of a 21-point outburst. Again and again, they fired up threepointers, connecting on five of them. Redskin defenders trying to defend the paint could not get out on their shooters quick enough.

Brister and Marshall Ludrick both had two field goals each and Matchen added a three-pointer to his total. The Redskins found themselves down 29 to 21 at the half.

In third quarter action, the Savages started a parade to the free throw line. They were seven of nine. Brister added another three-pointer and was one of two from the line. Ludrick had a three-pointer of his own and was one of two from the stripe. The Redskins found themselves in the hole, 43 to 31.

Earlier this season, the Redskins have fought back in the fourth quarter to erase a lead. This would not be the case for this game, the Savages were having none of it. Brister added two more field goals and Tucker Rumer hit a nice three. Final score was 53 to 38.

Box score: Brister lead all scorers with 22 points. He was one of three from the line. Ludrick finished with eight points and was one of two from the line. Next was Matchen with five. He was two of two from the line. Rumer hit a three-pointer. As a team, the Redskins were four for seven from the free throw line. By comparison, the Savages went nine of 13. Surprising totals for such a physical game.
