Night with the Chamber

Several Marshall Countians were recognized during the annual Marshall County Chamber of Commerce banquet and silent auction Thursday night, Feb. 18, at the Wildcat Den on the campus of Madill High School. (see related photo feature page on 1B). Award winners were: Rick Lane, 2015 Kayte Hayward Volunteer of the Year; Floyd Miller, 2015 Humanitarian of the Year; Mark and Sherry Codner, 2015 Raymond Gary Leadership Award; Art Hackler and Randy Monroe, 2015 Community Investment Award; Tycoon Motorsports, LLC, 2015 Small Business of the Year; and Red River Valley Rural Electric Association, 2015 Large Business of the Year.

Washita Bridge Project Update

Sales Tax Exemptions: A Puzzling Roster of Haves and Have-Nots

The National Rifle Association is exempt from the sales tax in Oklahoma. The American Civil Liberties Union is not. Organizations promoting the preservation of wild ducks and turkeys get a sales tax break. Groups promoting different wildlife, or the welfare of dogs and cats, do not.

Local Emergency Planning Committe Now Established

The Marshall County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) has been established and is made up of: the chairman of the board who is director of plant operations; safety officer, Mike Walker, with Alliance Health Madill who is also secretary, and treasurer Erin Lemons who is commissioner of Marshall County District 2.

Willis Bridge Part of Eight-Year Construction Work Plan

On the border of Oklahoma and Texas (between Marshall and Grayson counties) just feet from the original site of the Willis Ferry, stands the Willis Bridge. On Oct. 30, 1960, construction was completed on the bridge. Now, almost 56 years later, on Feb. 8, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation announced a proposal to replace the Willis Bridge on State Highway 99 and U.S. Highway 377 over Lake Texoma.

Property Purchased for Future Site of Taco Bell

A new, fast-food chain will be making its home here in Madill. Plaza Dine Inc. is a 19-store franchise located in Jacksonville, Texas. With operations of restaurants in the Dallas, Ft. Worth, Sherman, and Denison areas, Plaza Dine will soon be opening a Taco Bell in Madill as its 20th store. Owner of Plaza Dine, Dennis Durrett, says his company is always looking to expand and likes to explore communities that fit Plaza Dine’s needs.

Loud Music Call Leads MPD to Arrest of Three Men

On Friday, Feb. 12, officers from the Madill Police Department responded to a loud music complaint at 607 East Main Street in Madill. According to the report filed by Officer Alex Boren – after arriving at the scene, Boren made contact with a man standing outside a black SUV which was playing loud music. Boren asked the man (later identified as Jovann Tovar, 20) to turn the music down so they could talk.
