Heartbreak at State

Wampus Cats’ late offensive attack stuns Redskins

In a game that is sure to go down as an instant classic, the Atoka Wampus Cats beat the Kingston Redskins 9 to 7 in the Class 3A Semifinal on May 10 at Edmond Memorial High School.

While statistics tell much of the story of this game, it turned on a few plays and sheer luck.

When the top of the seventh inning started, Kingston was sitting on a 7 to 4 lead. The Redskins were three outs away from a berth in the Class 3A State Championship Game.

Kingston head coach, Darron Henson, looked to secure the win by handing the ball to senior pitcher Conner Brister to start the seventh inning.

The tide quickly turned in the Wampus Cats’ favor as the leadoff hitter, junior pitcher Cade Carroll, reached on an error by Kingston shortstop, Ty Herndon.

Then, Brister walked Atoka senior third baseman,Coby Grimsley. Two on, no outs for Beck. Another error by Herndon on an attempted field and toss to second base allowed Atoka senior shortstop, Brenton Beck, to reach first base.
