Col. Jason Harold Cain Jr.

Col. Jason Harold Cain Jr., 88, of Madill, Okla., passed away Tuesday, April 24, 2018, at the Carrus Specialty Hospital in Sherman, Texas. He is survived by his bride, Jo Ann, their three children, six grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. Cain was born on Jan. 25, 1930, in Wewoka, Okla., to the late Jason H. Cain, Sr., and Leona Cain, and he was raised there until he graduated high school. After receiving his bachelor’s degree from University of Oklahoma in 1953, Cain joined the U.S. Army. He served his country for 32 years, completing tours of duty in Europe (Paris, Orléans, France), Vietnam, Okinawa, and the United States (Honolulu, Hawaii; Ogden and Dugway, Utah). Cain earned a number of medals and awards, notably the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service in connection with military operations against hostile forces in Vietnam from January 1968 to January 1969. Additional awards include the National Defense Medal with palm, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal with four stars. Cain enjoyed a long career as a transportation officer and logistician, including an important role in coordinating the funeral arrangements for John F. Kennedy, Jr. The family moved to Fort Smith, Ark., where Cain worked for Armbruster Stageway and helped design a laser alignment system for limousines. He later went on to teach ROTC at Northside High School in Fort Smith, Ark., for 14 years and received a Military Order of Purple Heart Citation for his contribution to youth community affairs. After retiring, Cain and Jo Ann moved home to Madill, where he enjoyed tinkering in his shop, flying remote-control airplanes, and playing golf. If he was on a golf course, he was happy! Cain also enjoyed his decades-long membership in the Masonic Lodge, most recently the Creekmore Masonic Lodge #74, where he was often seen cooking up pancakes to help raise funds for the Lodge. He was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Cain is survived by his wife: Jo Ann Cain, Madill, Okla.; children: Jason Cain, Madill, Okla.; Mary Kolankiewicz and husband, Mike, Huntsville, Ala.; Ruth Mecham and husband, Ron, Aurora, Colo.; grandchildren: Timothy Kolankiewicz and wife, Shelley; Daniel Kolankiewicz and wife, Kristie; Andrew Kolankiewicz; Lee Ann Larsen; Ronald Mecham (deceased); James Mecham; Julie Fink and husband, Jeremy; great-grandchildren: Nicholas Kolankiewicz; Joshua Kolankiewicz; Natalie Kolankiewicz; Dasha Woods; Dakota Fink; Donald Fink; Ronald Fink; Lillee Larsen; Rachel Larsen; and Logan Larsen. Visitation was Monday, April 30, 2018, at Watts Funeral Home, Madill, Okla., from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Services were Tuesday, May 1, 2018, at 2 p.m. at Watts Memorial Chapel, Madill, Okla. Mike Hobbs and Jason Cain officiated the service. Interment was at the Woodberry- Forest Cemetery, Madill, Okla. Casket bearers were: Mike Kolankiewicz, Tim Kolankiewicz, Tom Savage, James Meacham, Jason Cain, and Diron Robinson.
